We are starting a new part of KLM Equestrian where we feature one of our brand ambassadors every Monday. This week, we are featuring Samantha Murphy. I first got to know Samantha several months ago on Etsy when she was trying to purchase a set of wraps! She sent me a picture of her wraps on Devon and it was actually KLM Equestrian’s first Instagram post to reach 100 likes!
Where are you from: I am from a small town, Stow, in Massachusetts
What’s your favorite show to compete at: So far my favorite show I have been to is HITS Saugerties. I went for the first time last season and it was such a great experience to be a part of!
Tell us about your horse(s) and what division you show them in: I full lease a 15.1h 10 year old gray QH gelding, Devon aka Double Dare. Dev is a kill pen pony that an organization located at my barn, Lucky Horse Equine Rescue (LHER) picked up a long time ago. As soon as the little, underweight, green pony came to safety, we all knew he was something special. When he came and first started under saddle, he was wiggy, spooky and could not canter to the left (a baby quirk of his). He was very cautious but knew what we had done for him; he knew (and still knows) we saved his life. He was in our skilled school program for many years when a girl leased him and wanted to help this little boy reach his full potential. After a summer with one of my best friends training him in the basics, he was off to a fantastic start, she took him to local shows all the way to Fieldstone at the end of the season. After her summer I fell in love with this pony, right away I knew he was my heart horse. We had a rocky start together, because he was still green. But with the first show season under our belt, we got our groove. I have been working on getting him fancy and winning in the A’s and AA’s for the past two years. We will be competing in the Childrens Eq, Hunters, the MHJ and M&S medals, and the Hunter Pleasures this coming season. To this day everyone is blown away at this little rescue and his passion for pleasing everyone. He will do anything for me and always jumps his heart out for me. I could go on forever about how much I love Devon!
How did you learn about KLM Equestrian: I found KLM on Etsy when I was in need of new standing wraps. I had a few questions so I reached out to Liz, and was amazed by her hospitality and willingness to answer my questions. I was even more drawn to KLM when my order came with a handwritten thank you note from Liz and a free 10% off coupon. I was hooked! I am so honored to be apart of such an amazing company!
Your favorite KLM product: Hmmmm, if I had to pick just one, it would have to be the polos! I love a pop of flair matched with a classic solid color, so I LOVE the unique patterns that is offered with the polos. But I love all of KLM’s products!
What mantra/inspirational quote do you live by: My personal mantra is ‘go with the flow’. I know it’s simple but it helps me enjoy all of life’s wonderful moments without getting caught up in the little imperfections. It becomes a strong mantra in the ring because in our sport, anything and everything can and will go wrong, so if you just go with the flow everything will turn out okay in the end.
How did you get into horseback riding: My two older cousins were talented equestrians so my grandmother took me to their barn in upstate NY to go on a pony ride when I was 5 and I fell in love. We also have two very close family friends who are two sisters that own a few horses and held a summer pony camp that I went to every summer. From there we moved out to the ‘country’ of MA and the rest is history!
Who is your riding inspiration: My riding inspiration is my first trainer, Ellen. She taught me the class, perseverance, elegance, competitiveness and stamina an equestrian must have. Her riding ability will forever be in my mind every time I get on a horse. When I was a little pony rider I would always say “I want to be like Ellen”. She set the standard for my own personal riding ability and I am forever grateful that she took a chance on me and helped form me into the horsewoman I am today.
Favorite junk food: I think either Reese’s or SourPatch watermelon
Biggest riding accomplishment: My biggest accomplishment so far is placing 8th at HITS in the competitive Pre-Childrens division out of 54 with Devon.
